A Summer Weekday in Gzira, Hour by Hour: The Remote Worker’s Day

People ask what it’s actually like — not the itinerary, the ordinary Tuesday. So here is one, hour by hour: a summer weekday in Gzira for a remote worker on European-and-US hours, told honestly, heat and all. First in our Gzira Rhythms series.

In short: the summer weekday in Gzira runs sea-first — a 6:45 swim before the heat, deep work through the cool morning while your home timezone sleeps, a shaded lunch, calls through the afternoon, the island’s great communal golden hour at six, and dinner outdoors at nine. The heat doesn’t fight the workday; it schedules it.

6:45 — The sea, before everyone

Down the Strand, ten minutes along the front, and into the water at Exiles or the rocks by Manoel Island. The sea at this hour is bathwater-calm, the light low and pink, the only company pensioners doing patient lengths who’ve been swimming this exact spot for fifty years. This is the commute. It does not get old.

7:30 — Coffee, weighed and poured

Back at the apartment, salt still drying, the ritual: fifteen grams, the slow spiral, the bloom. Breakfast on the balcony while the town below stacks chairs and unlocks shutters. The day hasn’t asked anything of you yet, and you’re already two experiences up.

9:00 — The office door closes

The blessed hours: Europe is barely at its desk and America is asleep. Nothing pings. In the office — monitor up, drapes half-drawn against the glare, AC at a civilised hum — you do the real work of the day before anyone can interrupt it. Three hours here outperform six fragmented ones anywhere.

13:00 — Lunch in the shade

Out to the town’s counters and kitchens — a pastizz and tea in a glass if it’s a humble day, cold tomato-and-olive-oil at home if it’s humbler. Midday summer Malta is for shade, not heroics; the locals have this figured out, and you copy them.

14:00–18:00 — The talking hours

Europe’s afternoon, then — from mid-afternoon — the US East Coast arriving with its energy and its calendar invites. Calls sound studio-clean behind heavy drapes, and nobody on the video knows the Mediterranean is eighty metres from your desk. This is the section of day you sell; the island wraps around it.

18:00 — Golden hour, the island’s daily festival

Laptop shut. The whole coast comes outside at once: the promenade fills, the swimming rocks take their evening shift, runners thread the front, and the light does the thing photographers fly here for. Swim again, or walk the mile of seafront to Sliema and back with an ice cream you’ve earned by existing.

21:00 — Dinner at Maltese o’clock

Nobody civilised eats at seven in a Maltese summer. Nine, outside, somewhere a short walk away — or, on the best nights, the ten-minute ferry across black water to Valletta lit up like an opera set, and dinner beneath the bastions. The ride home is the digestif.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical day like for a remote worker in Malta?

In summer: an early sea swim before the heat, focused morning work while home time zones sleep, a shaded promenade lunch, afternoon calls as Europe and then the US come online, a golden-hour swim or walk at six, and dinner outdoors at nine like a local. The sea bookends the workday.

When do people swim in Gzira in summer?

Early and late — locals swim before 8am and again after 5pm, when the heat softens and the light turns gold. The rocky spots along the Gzira–Sliema front (Exiles, Fond Għadir, Qui-si-Sana) are all within a 20–30 minute walk.

Is it too hot to work in Malta in summer?

Not indoors — apartments run air conditioning in every room, and the working day naturally shifts to the local rhythm: outdoor life early and late, productive hours in cool rooms through the middle. The heat structures the day rather than ruining it.

That’s Tuesday. Wednesday is similar, and that’s the point — a rhythm worth repeating for a month or a season. Morrison Court: five self-contained apartments in Gzira built around exactly this day, for one or two guests, office door and swimming distance included. Live it at morrisoncourt.com.
